Agartala(Tripura) Jul 9: Belonia sub-division under the South Tripura District is reeling under monsoon fury. The IMD changed the ‘red alert’ to ‘orange alert’ today for the South District indicating rains in lesser intensity.

After incessant rains on Monday, several areas under the sub-division were submerged forcing inhabitants to take shelter at relief camps.

According to a Government press release, at present, 757 individuals from 231 families are sheltered in 12 relief camps in Belonia subdivision, including 336 men, 341 women, and 80 children. The administration is providing food and arranging medical care as needed. Last night, 541 people from 171 families were sheltered in 8 camps, including 231 women, 218 men, and 93 children. This information was reported by the Belonia Subdivision Magistrate’s Office.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha reviewed the flood situation with district authorities and directed them to take comprehensive relief and rescue measures to support affected families.

State Cooperation Minister Sukla Charan Noatia visited several relief camps in Belonia and Jolaibari on Wednesday.

District Administration, South Tripura in its Facebook page informed citizens on the water levels of Muhuri River in Belonia and Feni River in the Sabroom sub-division. Water-level at 4pm on July 9 in Muhuri River was 14.50 meters.

At Sabroom Bazar Ghat area, Feni River was recorded flowing at 17.05 meters at 3.15 pm on July 9.

Meantime, quoting the officials, IANS reported relentless rainfall since Monday triggered severe flash floods in South Tripura district, displacing more than 900 individuals from 250 families, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

As a safety measure, the district administration announced the closure of all schools and anganwadi centers. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been urged to stay vigilant as the situation remains critical.

Teams from the disaster management department, Civil Defence, local administration, and the Tripura State Rifles have been deployed and are on standby to provide necessary assistance. “We are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring immediate support wherever needed,” an official said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ on July 8 for the South District.

However, the IMD has downgraded the alert to an ‘orange alert’ on Wednesday forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming days. Besides, a ‘yellow alert’ was also issued for Gomati and Sepahijala districts. (With inputs from IANS)
