Agartala, December 09, 2019: IPFT sponsored 12-hour strike ended with reports of teachers being assaulted in Khowai today. IPFT called the Bandh protesting against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and demanding separate – Tipraland. Normal life was affected in ADC areas.
Miscreants reportedly belonging to IPFT unleashed violence in two schools under Khowai district and assaulted 10 teachers and one group D staff. All the injured persons are undergoing treatment. Local sources said, Bandh supporters entered in Ratanpur HS (+2) School and Birchandrapur HS (+2) School and thrashed teachers badly and staff as they entered schools to conduct Test Exams of Class XII. Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath condemned the incident.
In two other incidents in Ampi and Khedernaal area under Gomati district, tension prevailed as bandh supporters and BJP activists come in direct contact and confront each other. However, security personnel swung into action and brought situation under control.
Road transport and rail services were also hit due to Bandh. Almost all offices, business establishments, markets and schools in TTAADC areas remained shut. Markets on Haatbaar at several TTAADC areas were also affected. Two universities – Tripura University (a central varsity) and Maharaja Bir Bikram University (under Tripura Government) – postponed their examinations due to the strike.
The administration made elaborate security arrangements. A huge contingent of security forces including central para-military and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) were deployed to deal with the situation.
More than 3000 picketers were arrested from different places across the State. Apart from teacher-assaults in two schools in Khowai, tension prevailed in Nutanbazar area and Ampi area as IPFT and BJP supporters confronted each other. However, the timely intervention of security personnel diffused the tension.
