
Transforming from ‘Look East Policy’ to ‘Act East Policy’, PM Modi signalled a major change in Central Govt’s Policies pertaining to North East Region (NER). Reiterating the same eagerness Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences said, NER has become a special focus point of PM Modi’s vision. Union Cabinet regularly holds discussion and reviews various Govt Policies being implemented in NER. He said this after inaugurating State Bio-tech Hub and Bioinformatics at Tripura University, Agartala on Sep 21, 2015.
Talking about the bio-diversity in Tripura and other States of NER, Dr Vardhan said, the Govt is working to enhance the scientific infrastructure to explore and use the bio-diversity of the region. While existing bio-tech hubs and bioinformatics Centres would be strengthen, new such Centres would be set up, he added. Focusing on Bio-tech lad and Bioinformatics, Dr Vardhan said, Union Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Ministry has provided Rs 3,70 crore for such Centre to Tripura Central University.

The Bio-Tech Hub carries out research in several fields including research to understand the microenvironment of Cancer initiation and prevention. The Bio-Tech lab also carries out screening different medicinal plants for different diseases.

The main objectives of the Bioinformatics Centre are to support teaching activities of Biology through application of Bioinformatics and to organize training and workshop for familiarizing the application Bioinformatics in teaching and research. Also, promoting research work in Bioinformatics and to develop effective collaboration with experimental scientists is another main objective. The major thrust areas of the research of the Centre are genome informatics, sequence analysis, comparative genomics.
