Agartala, January 20, 2020: Thousands of Bru refugees, who would be settled in Tripura after the signing of a quadripartite agreement between the Centre and other stakeholders, brought out rally of Damchhera under North Tripura district to ‘thank’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb and royal family head Pradyot Kishore Debbarman for Rs 600 crore settlement package for Bru refugees in Tripura. Dressed in multi-colour traditional attire, a large number of Bru women participated in the rally.
Bru refugees thank Govt
The rally – organized by YBA and BSCO – roamed around Damchhera market area and raised slogans lauding the initiatives of the Union and State Government as well as other concerned persons and organizations.
After the rally, a public meeting was held near Damchhera BJP office. General secretary of YBA Central Committee, Kapila Reang, vice president of Damchhera BJP Mandal committee Rabindra Reang, MBDPF president Swibanga Reang, general secretary Bruno Msha addressed the gathering. Around 1500 Bru people attended the rally and public meeting.
Brief on Bru refugees
It may be noted, that after a fierce ethnic conflict, around 35,000 Bru refugees had fled their native villages in Mizoram in 1997 October and took refuge in six relief camps in North Tripura. Several failed attempts were made to repatriate the Bru to Mizoram. On January 16 last, a quadripartite agreement was signed and a package of Rs 600 crore for a permanent settlement of Bru refugees in Tripura was announced.
“We are thankful to Narendra Modi and Biplab Kumar Deb for the ‘historic’ agreement. We are also grateful to Pradyut Kishore Debbarman for his role in signing the agreement”, Bru leaders said while addressing the gathering.
“Mizoram Government failed to discharge its responsibilities in solving our problems. Bru people spent almost 23 years in severe distress – but Mizoram Government took no effective role in addressing our issues and solve our problems”, MBDPF president and other leaders commented.
