Agartala, July 14, 2019: Spells of heavy downpour since Friday evening triggered flash flood in Agartala and other areas. Most of the low lying areas in Agartala were inundated. Heavy rainfall flooded several other places across the State.
Around 4000 families were taken to relief camps across the State. Train services have been affected while Road transport was also badly hit as flood water inundated roads in several areas in the State. The weatherman has predicted generally cloudy sky with rains and thundershowers across the state tomorrow. “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over all districts of the State”, sources in Disaster Management said.
As per latest reports, 3934 persons of 1185 families have been affected and 28 relief camps opened by the State Government in two districts of West Tripura and Khowai districts. Other three districts i.e. Sepahijala, South Tripura and Gomati districts are partly affected.
Intermittent rains inundated Agartala and its outskirts. Howrah River in the city is flowing above the danger level at 10.73mtr (danger level 10.50 mtr) while other major rivers in the State are still below the mark. Several areas under Agartala Municipal Corporation have been inundated and roads seemingly turned into rivers affecting transportation.
The District administration along with disaster management teams launched rescue and evacuation operations and managed to protect lives of affected people. Total 2826 persons from 838 families are sheltered in 20 relief camps in West District. Necessary relief materials are being provided to the sheltered people. All 13 pumps are operational since early morning for pumping out the flood water from low lying areas. Water Resource Department is keeping close watch of water levels in Howrah river and Katakhal canal.
Vast paddy fields and villages were inundated by the waters overflowing from the swollen river and its tributaries.
Regional met office warned, the city and other parts of the state will receive moderate to heavy rainfall till next two days. “Sky will remain cloudy, more rainfall is expected in the next 48 hours”, an IMD official added. Chief Minister, Biplab Kumar Deb is constantly monitoring the situation of flood relief work in the State. He has also directed all key agencies to monitor and assist in the flood relief work being undertaken in the State.
