Agartala, April 06, 2019: Cracks in top-brass of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) – tribal-centric regional party of Tripura and an ally of ruling BJP – became clear as one of the senior leaders today quit the Party. In an interesting twist of events, senior leader and vice president of IPFT Ananta Debbarma today severed relation with IPFT and there is all the possibilities that he will join Congress.
The senior leader was one of the key people who led the separate “Twipraland” movement in the state along with party supremo NC Debbarma and general secretary Mebar Kumar Jamatia. He is also considered to be one of the central party higher ups who had a noticeable following in tribal dominated areas of the state.
The militant turned politician also left no stone unturned in urging the BJP to get agreed in a common minimum programme with the IPFT. He had also played crucial role as the vice president of TNV— Tripura National Volunteer, an extremist organization during the insurgency period.
In his letter to the party president, Ananta Debbarma mentioned that due to some “unavoidable circumstances taking place in the party”, he was compelled by his own instinct to take the decision. Meanwhile, the Congress party sources confirmed that Ananta Debbarma with a large fraction of IPFT supporters would join the party.
“It is almost final that the IPFT vice president Ananta Debbarma will join the party tomorrow, the venue of joining and the number of people along him is yet to be ascertained” added the source.
Since last few months, Ananta Debbarma had a slew of secret sitting with TPCC president Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, and it was anticipated that the IPFT might break the coalition with the BJP and would forge an alliance with the Congress. But, IPFT president NC Debbarma refuted the offer and decided to remain in the “friendly contest” with the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Sources close to Ananta also claimed that some of the top ranked leaders of the party are likely to resign from the party and follow Ananta’s footsteps soon.
