September 06, 2018: On the day of 57th Teachers’ Day, the State honoured eminent literary activist and Royal Family member, Maharajkumari Kamalprabha Devi. The State Government conferred Maha Rani Tulshibati Award on 107-years old Maharajkumari Kamalprabha Devi – the mother of the Deputy Minister Jishnu Dev Varman for her immense contribution in the field of education and other social services.
The Award was introduced for the first time in the honour of Maha Rani Tulshi Bati who played a pivotal role in spreading education, especially among girls. The award was handed over to the Deputy Chief Minister in a programme organized to commemorate Teachers’ Day at Agartala today.
After receiving the award on behalf of his mother, Jishnu Dev Varma was visibly overwhelmed. In an emotional speech, he fondly recalled his joy while informing his mother about receiving the award today morning. He said, over telephone I expressed my hearty gratitude to my mother being the first recipient of the Award introduced by the State Government.
“Although, my mother received several awards, but this award had made her overjoyed. The reason is simple, the award is being named after Maha Rani Tulshibati”, Dev Varma said and added, Maharani Tulshibati School is one of the oldest schools in the country which offered education to girls.
Speaking about Maharani Tulshibati, he said, Maharani was not highly educated, however, she realized value of knowledge and education at a time when very few could imagine about girls’ education. She worked for spreading girls’ education in the State.
“Maha Rani’s contribution in education clearly indicates that it is not essential to be highly educated for spreading knowledge”.
Stressing on value of knowledge, Jishnu Dev Varma said, a king is always prone to attack by enemies, a rich person is afraid of thieves – but an learned person has no fear as no one can snatch away his knowledge.
