November 15, 2018: Tension prevails across Belonia in the wake of attack on CPIM leaders allegedly by BJP activists today. Himanshu Roy, incumbent Sabhadhipati of South Tripura Zila Parishad, along with five other elected members was allegedly attacked by BJP cadres in Belonia. The BJP leadership, however, denied the allegation. The incident took place near office of SP (South) when they were on their way to attend the general meeting of Zila Parishad. Condemning the attack, CPIM State committee demanded immediate Police action and arrest of culprits.
The disturbances began last night when BJP supporters attacked the house of Roy and few others to prevent them from attending the general meeting. Roy along with five other elected members- escorted by Police – went to attend the general meeting in the afternoon. On their way, the vehicle they were boarded in was attacked and damaged. They, however, escaped from the scene unhurt and reached the SP (South) office. Sensing trouble, Police charged baton and burst tear gas shells to control the violent mob.
As news of the attack on BJP activists spread, tension simmered across Belonia, known for its volatile nature. Over 25 BJP activists were injured in the lathi charge. On reaching information, DM (South) also visited the spot and took stock of the situation. Tension prevailed in the area and top leaders of both the parties are camping in the area currently. Roy filed an FIR with Belonia Police Station. Effort is being made to arrest the culprits, Police said. CPIM leaders condemned the atrocities on political opponents. Local BJP leaders denied any involvement of their workers in the incident.
