Agartala, April 24, 2019: Tension prevailed in Gandacherra sub-division under Dhalai district as supporters of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) – an ally of ruling BJP- held road blockades in all the three highways—Gandacherra-Rasyabari, Gandacherra-Ambassa and Gandacherra-Amarpur that connect the subdivision with rest of the state.
The area went to LS Polls on April 23 and trouble between IPFT and BJP activists started after polling was over which ultimately culminated to scuffle in which several supporters of both the Parties were injured. IPFT and BJP filed FIR and counter FIR. Demanding arrests of accused BJP activists, IPFT today blocked the three roads throwing transport completely out of gear.
It may be noted, even though IPFT is an ally of ruling BJP, IPFT went solo in Lok Sabha Polls and contested in both LS seats of the State – much at the discomfort of ally BJP. Although, on April 23 polls, there were no incidences of chaos, bitter altercation between supporters of IPFT and BJP turned into brawl – however, with intervention of senior local leaders, both parties scaled down tension. But IPFT called to shut down the market in protest against BJP’s alleged aggression. Today, IPFT supporters assembled and staged road blockade which is continuing till the last available report at 7pm.
Local administration intervened unsuccessfully and agitators threatened to continue road blockade until administration arrests accused BJP supporters. Transport services and all sorts of vehicular movements collapsed completely adding plights of common people.
