Agartala, February 11, 2019: A massive erupted today at Kanchanpur market in North district in which at least 10 houses and 15 shops were razed to ashes – however, there is no report of casualty.
Local sources said, fire broke out after bursting of a gas cylinder at a local shop around 5:30 pm today. Adjacent shops and some houses were quickly engulfed in the flames. Police sources said, the total loss is estimated to be at least Rs. 70 lakh.
The Fire Fighters accompanied by Kanchanpur police and Assam Rifles jawans brought the flames under control after an hour-long fight. However, local people alleged that the Fire personnel took too long time to reach the spot. “The Fire Service was called at 5.30 pm but at least 15 shops and ten houses were completely reduced to ashes before the Fire tender reached the spot,” said a shop owner.
Describing severity of losses, one of the shop owners said, “With lull in day-to-day trading, losses incurred due to fire will be hard for businessmen to digest. Business communities are facing hardships after demonitization and GST implementation -the fire has ruined us completely”.
Some of the local traders who suffered heavy losses in the fire incident are- Anju Sutradhar, Sumita Sutradhar, Suman Sutradhar, Priyanath Sutradhar, Abu Sutradhar, Munna Das and Biplab Nath.
