November 16, 2018: Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar along with other senior CPIM leaders was allegedly gheraoed by BJP activists in Bishalgarh CPIM office this afternoon. The vehicle of CPIM MLA of Kamalasagar Narayan Choudhury was also damaged by BJP cadres. A tense situation prevails across Bishalgarh in the wake of attack on CPIM leaders by BJP activists. The BJP leadership, however, denied the allegation.
The incident took place in front of Bishalgarh CPIM divisional office where Sarkar went to attend a convention on November Revolution. The disturbances began in the afternoon when BJP supporters assembled in front of Bishalgarh CPIM office and damaged the vehicle of Choudhury. Choudhury, however, escaped unhurt from the scene and reached the CPIM office.
Sensing trouble, a large contingent of Police and TSR was pressed into action to control the violent mob, according to reports. A CPIM leader said, “BJP has created a new precedent here. Former Chief Minister was gheraoed. This is scandalous. There were 100 hooligans. Tripura is not safe”.
“They tried to hit Choudhury. Luckily, his driver shielded him”, he added. When contacted SP (Sepahijala) Kulwant Singh over telephone, he said, “There was a trouble in Bishalgarh in the afternoon. So far no complaint has been filed. TSR jawans have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident”. Singh also visited the spot and took stock of the situation.
Tension prevailed in the area and top leaders of both the parties are camping in the area currently. CPIM leaders condemned the atrocities on political opponents.
