December 31, 2018: Political violence does not show strength rather it displays weakness – people will not tolerate violence for long and the ruling party must take actions to rein in the miscreants who are creating troubles and assaulting Opposition Party workers. Former Chief Minister and CPI-M Politburo member Manik Sarkar said this. He said this while he was visiting the wounded party workers at GB Hospital in Agartala today.
In political clashes on December 26 last at different areas under Kamalpur in Dhalai, around 7-8 CPM workers – including 2 women – were injured. Some of those injured party workers were shifted to GB Hospital. After interacting with the wounded persons, Manik Sarkar condemned the assaults on Political activists and urged the younger generation to come forward to defeat plan of miscreants.
“Democracy has become farcical in the State as opposition party leaders and workers are facing relentless attacks. This trend is not good for the future of the State as well as the democracy. Youths of the State need to play a decisive role in curbing the activities of miscreants”, Sarkar said.
He alleged, democracy is under serious threat in the State at this moment. “It seems that no one other than the ruling party has the right to exist in the State. Violence and intimidation have poised the overall situation”, he commented.
The Civil and Police administration as well as the ruling Party have to wake up and take decisive actions against the troublemakers to ensure peaceful civic life and secured environment for all including the supporters and activists of Opposition Parties.
“Attack on opposition is not an indication of their strengths, but highlights their weakness. Ruling Party is – instead of taking actions against the miscreants who are involved in attacks on political opposition – in denial mode”, he alleged. It is important that ruling party reacts to reality and intervene affectively in curbing violence. Inactiveness from the part of the ruling party is a bad signal – and people are watching everything in silence. It is sure that people of Tripura will not tolerate miscreants’ activities for long, Sarkar cautioned.
