December 03, 2018: In the wake of relentless Police crackdown, Ganga smugglers in Tripura seem to be leaving no avenues to smuggle ganja. Few months ago, Police found smugglers were using empty oil tankers to smuggle out Ganja from Tripura. And today, an Ambulence was found ferrying ganja. Acting on a tip-off, Police signaled an Ambulance to stop. However, driver of the Ambulance and his help fled leaving the vehicle. Police seized 170kg of marijuana ( Ganja) worth around Rs 9 lakh from the Ambulance at South Harua under Dharmanagar police station in North Tripura District today afternoon.
Police sources said, total 17 packets – each sack containing 10 kg ganja – were seized from the Ambulance. “The ambulance was carrying around 170 kg of marijuana ( ganja) stashed in as many as 17 sacks. The patrol party had seen two men inside the ambulance but they managed to flee, leaving the consignment behind. A manhunt is on,” said North Tripura SP Bhanupada Chakraborty.
“Police have found name related to the ownership of the ambulance. The owner of the Ambulance is Jharna Das ( 58). Police, however, are still not sure about the destination of the consignment. The SP said. “But, we will get to the root of this racket.”
Meanwhile,in a separate incident, Airport police in Agartala, arrested two persons and seized 51 kg of ganja and 630 bottles of banned cough syrup bottles. Alamgir Hussein, OC of Airport police station said, “we got information Prabir Datta and Narayan Datta have stock of ganja and banned cough syrup in their house in Narsinghar. Accordingly police conducted raid and recovered them and detained Prabir Datta and his son Subham Datta”.
