October 15, 2018: While state is busy in celebrating Durga Puja, people of Dhalai district of Tripura are battling against deadly Malaria. The disease has already claimed life of a baby on Sunday evening.
Sources said, five-year old Tikanti Tripura of Karma Kishore Para at Gandachhera in Dhalai was shifted from Gandachhera Hospital to District Hospital on Sunday evening, however she died even though doctors promptly took actions to save her.
While Tikanti collapsed, several other children are fighting with deadly Malaria and undergoing treatment at Dhalai district Hospital. Sukhi Ram Tripura (5), Niki Ranjan Tripura (2), Ramenjoy Tripura (3.5 years) are few of children fighting a battle against malaria and under going treatment in the district hospital. Several others are fighting a grim battle in local hospitals.
Malaria threats are looming over inhabitants of remote villages in Longtharai and Gandachhera, and in-flow of malaria affected patients has raised concerns of local administration.
“With Durga Puja celebrations started, hapless people of remote tribal hamlets are suffering from deadly malaria. Children are the worst sufferers, but adult are also getting down with Malaria”, said a medical staff of District Hospital. Health workers and medical staffs are working hard to bring the situation under control. Ground level workers are focusing on generating awareness among villagers.
Inhabitants of remote villages were given medicated mosquito nets to prevent prevalence of malaria – however, most of the people refused to use mosquito nets.
“We tried it, but feel suffocated under mosquito net – we cannot have a sound sleep”, said a mother of a malaria affected baby.
Last year puja was marred due to bad weather – and prevalence of malaria in rural areas is set to spoil spirit of the Puja this year also, opined puja organizers as reports of death of a baby came out.
