Agartala, April 20, 2019: For the first time in the history of Tripura, Election Commission has initiated actions against poll personnel who allegedly violated EC guidelines during Polls for West LS seat on April 11 last. In an unprecedented move, Santirbazar Police under South Tripura district arrested six poll personnel including one Presiding Officer.
It may be noted, allegations of large-scale rigging and intimidation of voters marred the poll spirit. Both CPIM and Congress knocked the door of Election Commission with evidences justifying their allegations of malpractices in poll process. Flurry of allegations led Election Commission look into the matter.
And, based on the evidence on record mostly gathered from webcasting and CCTV footages – six persons – Ratnajit Dey (Presiding Officer), Gourab Saha (Micro Observer), Sambhu Nath Chowdhury (polling officer), Sankar Majumder (polling officer), Sukumar Shil (polling officer), and Anukul Datta (cameraman) were arrested by Santirbazar police today.
They were later released on bail, said a duty officer from Santirbazar police station. The five persons were on election duty at 35/50 polling station (Sonar Tilla High School) under 35-Belonia assembly constituency. More such actions are on the card, sources said.
