Agartala, Jun 05, 2019: Health sector of the State is facing serious challenge as crisis of blood in blood banks has reached at an alarming level. In all the Hospitals – including Agartala based Hospitals – available blood units are alarmingly much lower than storage capacity in individual Hospitals.
As the blood banks in the State have very little to offer, thousands of life are reeling under threat due to serious crisis of blood units. As many as four district Hospitals have already exhausted stock while situations in other Hospitals are also almost similar putting lives of patients in danger. The magnitude of blood crisis problem can gauged from storage of blood unit – much less than capacity of storage in city’s blood banks at IGM Hospital, GBP hospital and Tripura Medical College.
According to the blood stock report published in the Tripura Blood Transfusion Council’s website, District Hospital North, District Hospital Gomati, District Hospital Khowai, and District hospital Santirbazar have completely run out of stock.
“Present status of blood banks in several district and sub-division hospitals makes critical and emergency surgeries almost impossible or life-threatening”, said one of the medical practitioners on condition of anonymity.
In the city centric blood banks of IGM hospital has 41 units (out of total 824 unit storage capacity), GBP hospital has 38 units (out of total 1024 unit storage capacity) and Tripura Medical College has 2 units (out of total 750 unit storage capacity) screened bloods—transfusion ready are available.
On the other hand, among the other blood banks—BMS hospital Kamalpur has 12 units of screened blood, RGM hospital has only 1 unit, Bisalgarh district hospital has 1, Belonia sub-division hospital has 13, and Kulai hospital has only 7 units. There are also dissimilarities between the data available in recently launched e-blood bank app as some units blood has been given away to the patients after the publication report.
In terms of availability against the blood groups, not the stock of A-ve and AB-ve blood units have exhausted completely whereas there are only one unit of B-ve blood and four units of O-ve blood available in the stock. In positive blood groups, AB+ve is available in the least of all—14 units. Nevertheless, A+ve, B+ve and O+ve are
available in 22 units, 17 units and 96 units.
