Agartala, January 21, 2019: Veteran tribal leader and former Minister Nagendra Jamatia (71) died here after prolonged illness on Sunday night. He is survived by his wife Pabitra Rani Jamatia and two children. Jamatia’s body was taken to the Tripura Assembly and the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) office before the cremation at his ancestral home at Totabaria under Udaipur in Gomati district.
Nagendra Jamatia was a former Agriculture and Horticulture Minister in the Congress-Tripura Upajati Juba Samity (TUJS). He was the president and general secretary of the TUJS – State’s oldest tribal based party. Later, TUJS along with Tripura National Volunteers (TNV) , and a few other tribal based parties in 2002 jointly formed the INPT – and Jamatia was the vice president. He was elected to the Tripura Assembly five times since 1978.
Leaders of both ruling and Opposition parties paid tributes and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
