September 24, 2018: The Central Government will spend Rs 1.50 lakh crore to improve national highways in Northeastern region, the Union Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said this after inaugurating Jowai-Ratacherra (Meghalaya Assam border) section of the National Highway- 06 today at Shillong and dedicated the road project to the nation. The 102 km long road was constructed at a cost of 683 crore rupees by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
Out of Rs 1.50 lakh crore, Tripura will get Rs 8,000 crore while Assam will get the highest amount – Rs 48,221 crore for improving national highways. Other states will also have a share in total fund of Rs 1.50 lakh crore.
A review meeting chaired by Nitin Gadkari was held at Shillong today. During the meeting, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb appraised the Union Minister of present conditions of existing NHs, funds required for renovation and repairing of existing NHs. He also highlighted about of construction of Manu-Singlum (NH 44A) and mentioned about Kailashahar-Khowai-Teliamura NH.
The Chief Minister urged Gadkari to sanction Rs 54 crore for procuring land to expand Amtali-Airport road into four-lane road.
