RR beats MI: Would have been nice to get this form earlier, says Stokes

Ben Stokes roared back to form on Sunday with an unbeaten 107 that helped Rajasthan Royals (RR) race to an eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. The win provides a filip to RR’s floundering chances of making it to the playoffs, which still depends upon the results of other matches.

“Sort of bittersweet to be honest – it took so long to get one for the team. I would have preferred to get this form two or three games before when we weren’t relying on other results to get us through to the qualifiers,” said Stokes in the post-match presentation ceremony, in which he was declared player of the match.

“It’s always nice to get back to form. We needed a result from today, so – it’s a good victory.”

Stokes comes into the match after making scores of 30, 19, 15, 41, and 5 thus far in the IPL. He said that he had his best training session on Saturday since coming to the UAE and took that confidence into the match. His innings on Sunday helped RR chase down a target of 196 with eight wickets and more than two overs to spare and was part of an unbeaten 152-run stand for the third wicket with Sanju Samson.

“Training yesterday was the best I have had for the full time I have been here. Came into the game with a lot more confidence than the other games. Nice to spend some time out in the middle and finish the game off,” he said.

Ben Stokes (107 not out) and Sanju Samson (54 not out) made a mockery of a target of 196 Mumbai Indians (MI) had set for Rajasthan Royals (RR) as they helped overhaul it with eight wickets and nearly two overs to spare in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Sunday.

It was Stokes’s second IPL century and his highest score in T20s. RR ended their innings on 196 for two wickets in 18.2 overs in reply to table toppers MI’s 195/5 wickets in 20 overs.

Despite the defeat, MI remain perched at the top position with 14 points from 11 matches while RR moved to the sixth place with 10 points from 12 games. The competition for the fourth is heating up.

Each team plays 14 league matches, at the end of which the top four teams qualify for the final, to be played on November 10.

Stokes’s century not only garnered a much-needed win for the Royals — who are still afloat in the league — but also outshone Hardik Pandya’s blitzkrieg (60 not out, off 21 balls) which had earlier propelled MI to a competitive looking total.

Chasing the challenging target, RR lost opener Robin Uthappa (13) and Steve Smith (11) early with their scorecard reading 44/2 in 4.4 overs. Both the RR players were picked by James Pattinson (2/40).

However, both Stokes and Samson dusted off their rustiness in style as their sensible batting left the MI bowlers struggling.

The duo steered RR to 100 runs in 10.2 overs before wrapping things off in 18.2 overs.

Stokes’s masterclass was decorated with 14 fours and three sixes while Samson’s innings contained four fours and three sixes.

Earlier, Hardik Pandya’s whirlwind knock along with some valuable contributions from Ishan Kishan (37), Suryakumar Yadav (40) and Saurabh Tiwary (34) powered MI to 195/5 wickets in 20 overs.

Hardik and Tiwary accumulated 79 runs of the last five overs as MI recovered from a mini collapse.

After losing opener Quinton de Kock (6) early, Suryakumar and Ishan shared an 83-run partnership to take MI near the 100-run mark.

Kartik Tyagi (1/45) got a breakthrough when he dismissed Kishan in the 11th over, leaving MI at 90/2.

The defending champions then went on to lose Suryakumar and Keiron Pollard (6) in quick succession that left MI at 101/4 in 13 overs. Pollard’s fall brought in Pandya, who started slowly before swiftly shifting gears.

Tiwary clobbered Jofra Archer (2/31) for 17 runs in the 17th over before Hardik, too, joined the party as he hammered Ankit Rajpoot (0/60) for 27 runs in the 18th over.

Archer got rid of Tiwary off the first delivery of the 19th over and conceded merely three runs in the next five balls.

However, Hardik was in no mood to spare RR bowlers as he smashed Kartik Tyagi for 27 runs off the final over, and in the process also notched up his half-century.

Hardik remained unbeaten on 61 as MI comfortably posted a challenging total. His carnage was laced with two fours and seven massive hits into the stands.

Brief scores: Rajasthan Royals: 196/2 wkts in 18.2 overs (Ben Stokes 107, Sanju Samson 54; James Pattinson 2/40) beat Mumbai Indians: 195/5 wkts in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 60 not out, Suryakumar Yadav 40; Shreyas Gopal 2/30) by 8 wickets.
