In a smart political move, Tripura unit of BJP managed to snatch away two Congress councilors and bolster saffron clout in heart of the capital. Prior to the Municipal polls, two elected Congress councilors along with party’s Sadar district chief crossed over to BJP on Friday. Congress Councilors Ratna Datta, Sampa Sarkar Chowdhury and Sadar Congress president Narayan Datta were welcomed in the saffron fold by BJP state president Dr Manik Saha.
The defection came at a time when Congress was trying to regain grounds under its feet despite reported discordant notes among its top leaders. Lobbyism remains unabated despite its abysmal show in the last Assembly Polls where Congress failed to win a single seat in the 60-seat Assembly.
According to the political analysts, the sudden defection of a major stronghold of the Congress party that too when the AMC polls were expected to be held in next few months, would surely deal a big blow for the Congress. However, no statement from the Congress party came in till filling the report and none of the leaders could be even reached to comment on the issue.
“BJP is a Party with a difference, those who have joined the party today have understood as to how the BJP actually functions. Each and every member of the party works dawn to dusk to promote the goal of development for all. They have seen the party to work in the state and then decided to work for us. They have understood the difference between BJP and other parties”, said Dr Manik Saha while addressing the joining programme.
Ratna Datta, one being asked on her decision to join BJP, said, “Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has shown Tripura a new glimmer of hope. After fighting for 10 long years being in the Congress, I have for the first time realized that only the BJP can do what every people’s leader aspire to do for its people. Though I have been in the Congress, the Chief Minister has never shown any indifference to my area which is why today I am in BJP”.
Another councilor, Sampa Sarkar Chowdhury said, “If anyone stands against the BJP at this point of time after witnessing all the developmental activities that this government is carrying out, he or she will be passively supporting the CPM. We have fought against the CPM and will always fight against that”.
