For the first time in the history of the State, The High Court of Tripura heard a petition at night on urgent basis. Chief Justice Sanjay Karol of the High Court of Tripura heard a petition filed by the state government at 9 pm today. The petition was filed challenging an interim bail order passed by a lower court in favour of five arrested persons involved in assaulting a doctor – Dr Dipanka Debnath -of IGM hospital in Agartala on wee hours of Thursday. After hearing the petition and considering importance of the case, the High Court of Tripura stayed the interim bail order passed by the lower court today.

Meanwhile, Doctors agitation protesting against the assault gained further momentum after Director of Health Services Dr JK Dev Varman attending a protest programme of the aggrieved doctors in Agartala today. Entire medical fraternity suspended private health delivery services and voluntary activities like attending blood donation camps etc across the State. Even though Doctors are contemplating of rendering mass-resignation, services in Hospitals are available so far.
The State Government has swung into action to end the impasse. In a press meet, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb assured that stern action against the culprits would be taken and steps would be taken to prevent the arrested persons being released under interim bail.
Five accused persons had already been arrested but they were granted interim bail by a lower court. But, the state government took prompt action and challenged the order in District and Sessions Court, West Tripura. The District and Sessions Judge accepted the petition but didn’t cancel the bail and fixed tomorrow for the hearing. The state government then asked the Advocate General to take quick action and moved the High Court of Tripura challenging the lower court’s order.
On this issue, Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath said, for the first time in state’s history, the High Court of Tripura conducted hearing on state government’s petition at night (at 9 pm) and stayed the interim bail order. It had been possible just because of the active role played by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
In another development, expressing concern for security of medical personnel, Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman in an unprecedented move on Friday surrendered his security including the escort. He demanded, “Adequate security in GBP, IGM and other district hospitals be ensured to stop such barbaric acts on the doctors on duty and other health staff.” In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, the Health minister conveyed this.
Agitating doctors hailed the decision of the Health Minister.
