April 11, 2018: The Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Deb Verma today called upon the teachers community to inculcate among the students importance of ‘values’.
He was delivering a lecture in the Tripura University on the occasion of Valedictory function of the one month long teachers’ training programme conducted by the Faculty Development Centre under Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission for Teachers Training project launched by the Government of India.
“Teachers’ role is not supposed to be limited to disseminating information to the students alone. They have to impart knowledge. And there is a difference between information and knowledge. Information can be gleaned from various sources –right from google, wikipedia to various other sources. But it is only the Teacher who can impart knowledge and through him the students develop values that would guide him or her in future life”, said the Deputy Chief Minister who was the Chief Guest of the programme.
“Information may change in all time to come but values will remain the same”, he said adding that teachers should have the role of “transformer – a friend, philosopher and guide”.
The Deputy Chief Minister said, “in our ancient India our Gurus used to not only pass on knowledge but also helped their students grow up with values”.
“There is no suitable expression in English for our Indian expression “Guru”- who occupies a divine position in Indian civilization and academic environment”, he pointed out.

Prof Anajan Kumar Ghosh, the Vice Chancellor of the Tripura University in his speech opined that the educational system, specially the method of imparting knowledge in the country needed to be changed to keep a pace with the upcoming generation’s attitude, aspirations and potential.
“Our educational system has become obsolete. It was 200 years old system and now the shortcomings are showing. This is an age of internet, social media etc. Students are now well versed with the new inventions. Quite naturally it is time that knowledge imparting methods are given a re-look and adequately reviewed”, said Prof Ghosh.
