Agartala, October 21, 2019: Tripura Police, at last, formally arrested ex-PWD Minister of the State and CPI-M leader Badal Choudhury tonight after he got himself admitted in a hospital in Agartala. He is accused of over Rs 600 alleged scam. The 70-year old CPI-M leader – also the deputy leader of Opposition – is suffering from multiple diseases and he had two by-pass surgeries in the past.
After remaining elusive for almost six days and after the High Court of Tripura ‘reserved verdict’ in anticipatory bail plea of Choudhury, new twist came up as reports poured in that Choudhury had got himself admitted in a city-based Hospital at around 9pm. Soon top brass of police reached the hospital and large contingent of security threw cordon around the Hospital.
Meanwhile, CPI-M leaders including Politburo member Manik Sarkar, State CPI-M secretary Gautam Das, former MP Narayan Kar visited the ailing leader.
Later, at around 9.40pm, Police formally arrested the ex-Minister. It is learnt his condition is stable and he is improving. In all likelihood, Police may take him to Police station tomorrow morning.
For last few days, after his anticipatory bail plea in a lower Court was rejected, Badal Choudhury issue grabbed the limelight – despite frantic search operations by Police at multiple places in the State, Police were in dark about Choudhury and he remained elusive. All eyes were firmly fixed on TV screens to know about verdict of the Tripura High Court on his bail plea.
After Police formally arrested the veteran leader, one of the senior journalist commented, at least we have reached at some sorts of logical conclusion.
