Agartala, December 14, 2019:Unidentified miscreants destroyed  winter crops of worth more than Rs 20 lakh in a village under Gandachhera in Tripura last night apparently aiming to trigger resentment and tension while situation is delicate in the area due to anti-CAB stir, local sources said.

Around 20 farmers incurred huge losses. Villagers noticed the ‘mindless’ destruction of winter crops today morning. Police forces, SDM and local MLA visited the affected areas today and assured farmers of compensation. In view of prevailing delicate situation, local people are demanding setting up of TSR camp in the area, sources said and added miscreants destroyed winter crop including cauliflower, cabbage, radish, green chilly etc.

“Even though situation after calling off anti-CAB strike was returning to normalcy in Gandachhera, in a blatant display of hatred, goons under the cover of darkness swooped on the farm-lands and cut horti crops. It is a self-destructive act which will haunt and hurt people as well as the miscreants and their families,” affected farmers claimed.

Areas under Gandachhera were limping back to normal after successive bandhs. But the act of miscreants indicate that a section is busy in disrupting normal life and in instigating panic and tension despite attempts by the administration to restore normalcy.

“It is an obvious attempt to disrupt peace and tranquility in the area and create ethnic tension. It remains to be seen as to how the administration cope with these elements and ensure peace”, local residents commented. Local residents also referred to State Government’s decision to withdraw camps of Tripura State Rifles from different rural areas and said, withdrawing TSR will not help – rather we need a TSR camp in the area to foil divisive forces. Otherwise it is likely that such elements will create disturbances for vested political interests, locals alleged.

Meanwhile sufferings of Gandachhera people remain unabated as students’ wing of INPT called a 12-hour strike in Raishyabari area. As expected, normal life was, once again, affected causing problems for inhabitants. Shops were closed, markets were shut and vehicles remained off the roads. Attendance in Schools was negligible. However, the strike passed off peacefully, local sources said.

“Uneasy calm is prevailing in Gandachhera sub-division, however, role of civil and police administration in checking miscreants will be crucial in restoring peace in the area”, said inhabitants of Gandachhera and Raishyabari.
