AYUSH Education Expansion: Tripura to Set Up Two New Colleges

Agartala, Dec 3: In a major step toward expanding access to alternative healthcare in Tripura, the state government has moved ahead with plans to establish a Homeopathic Medical College in Agartala and an Ayurvedic Medical College in the Gomati district.

The initiative aims to strengthen public access to traditional systems of medicine while creating structured educational avenues for aspiring practitioners.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on December 2 chaired a high-level meeting at the Civil Secretariat to review the progress of the project.

He said the two upcoming medical colleges—sanctioned with a combined financial support of ₹140 crore from the Union Ministry of AYUSH—would significantly enhance the availability of trained professionals in homeopathy and Ayurveda, thereby improving healthcare options at the grassroots.

Dr Saha, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, stressed that Tripura once had strong public confidence in homeopathic and Ayurvedic treatments. “That trust needs to be revived, and establishing these colleges will play a crucial role in restoring people’s faith in these traditional systems,” he said.

To ensure quality education and a robust institutional framework, the Chief Minister directed the officials to visit well-established homeopathic and Ayurvedic medical colleges in other states and apply the learnings in Tripura’s upcoming institutions. He also called for a clearly defined timeline for the colleges’ establishment.

Officials presented a detailed slideshow on the proposed structure of the two colleges, including 60 seats each, academic timelines, and departmental frameworks.

The institutions are expected to not only boost AYUSH education but also improve access to holistic healthcare for the state’s population, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where alternative systems remain widely preferred.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the placement opportunities for students from Tripura currently studying in AYUSH institutions outside the state, noting that the new colleges would reduce the need for students to migrate for specialised education and, in turn, contribute to a stronger local healthcare workforce.

The meeting was attended by Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte; National AYUSH Mission Member Secretary Saju Wahid A; PWD Chief Engineer Sanjay Kumar Das; Finance Secretary Apurba Roy; Family Welfare and Disease Prevention Director Anjan Kumar Das; Joint Director of the Health Department Ashok Dewan; and other senior officials.

With the establishment of these two medical colleges, Tripura is poised to broaden the reach of alternative healthcare and offer people more diverse medical choices rooted in traditional knowledge systems.
