Agartala: Bangali Mahila Samaj organised its annual state conference in Tripura, where the organisation raised several social and educational issues, including the demand to recognise Bengali as a Classical Language under the new National Education Policy.

Addressing the media, Bangali Mahila Samaj State Secretary Kanan Das said the conference aimed to create awareness among women and encourage their role in building a progressive society.

“A healthy society cannot be created without the contribution of women. Women and men must work together for social development,” Das said.

However, among the organisation’s nine-point demands, the demand related to Bengali language recognition emerged as a major focus.

Demand to include Bengali in Classical Languages list

Bangali Mahila Samaj demanded that the Bengali language be included in the list of Classical Languages under the new National Education Policy.

The organisation stated:

“In the new National Education Policy, Bengali language must be included in the list of Classical Languages.”

The demand reflects the organisation’s call for greater recognition of Bengali’s historical, literary and cultural importance.

Bangali Mahila Samaj said language plays a significant role in preserving identity and heritage, and Bengali deserves appropriate recognition at the national level.

Conference links language with cultural preservation

The organisation said education policies should also focus on protecting and promoting India’s diverse linguistic traditions.

According to Bangali Mahila Samaj, recognising Bengali as a Classical Language would strengthen efforts towards preserving the language and encouraging future generations to remain connected with Bengali literature and culture.

The group appealed to the government to consider the demand while framing and implementing education-related policies.

Women’s safety and social reforms among other demands

Apart from the language issue, Bangali Mahila Samaj also raised concerns over women’s safety, dignity and empowerment.

The organisation demanded equal respect and status for women and called for stronger action against crimes targeting women.

Kanan Das said women continue to face challenges despite progress in education and social awareness.

She urged the government to take effective steps to ensure women’s security and create a safer environment.

Demand for self-defence training and women empowerment

The organisation also demanded self-defence training programmes such as judo and karate in schools to help girls become more confident and capable of protecting themselves.

Bangali Mahila Samaj further called for special government initiatives to make women financially independent.

The organisation said employment opportunities should be expanded so that women can earn and become self-reliant.

Rally organised to highlight demands

Following the conference, Bangali Mahila Samaj organised a rally in Agartala to highlight its nine-point demand charter.

The rally moved through Modestin, Kaman Chowmuhani and the Post Office area before reaching its final destination. A short programme was also held at Udyan Chowmuhani.

The organisation said it would continue raising issues related to women’s rights, social development and Bengali language recognition before the government.

The demand for Bengali Classical Language Status has now become a key point in Bangali Mahila Samaj’s appeal for cultural and educational recognition.
