The Indefinite strike against mass Bru resettlemet in Kanchanpur will continue, said the Joint Movement Committee (JMC). Meanwhile, lynching of Fire Fighter Biswajit Debbarma drew massive condemnation from all quarters of the society.
The much awaited meeting scheduled to be held on Sunday , to end the ongoing impasse, between the JMC leaders and a delegation comprising Minister Santana Chakma and others did not take place. The meeting was crucial to end the weeklong stalemate in Kanchanpur sub-division.
Meanwhile, even as no violent incident has been reported in Panisagar so far after Saturday’s episode of aggressive clashes between protestors and security personnel; simmering tension is brewing in Kanchanpur and Damdama areas under North Tripura and Unakoti districts. Notably, mortal remains of the agitator Srikanta Das and fire service personnel Biswajit Debbarma reached Kanchanpur and Damdama and large number of mourners in the last journey of Das and Debbarma.
Biswajit Debbarma, a firefighter who sustained serious injuries while a frenzied mob thrashed him, passed away in GBP hospital Agartala. His demise evoked massive condemnations from all quarters of the society.
Regional political parties and civil societies condemned the demise of Biswajit who achieved martyrdom in Saturday’s clashes. IPFT Unakoti even organized a rally demanding justice for the brave firefighter. The IPFT workers holding black flags participated in the funeral of late Biswajit and hurled slogans demanding justice.
Top fire brigade officials also paid last homage to their braveheart fighter at Agartala headquarters on Sunday morning.
IPFT General Secretary Mangal Debbarma said, “we are deeply pained by the incident and action must be taken against those who have killed Biswajit”. On other hand, Joint committee of civil societies also convened a press conference here in Agartala Press Club and condemned the demise of Biswajit Debbarma.
On the other hand, Biswajit’s three-year-old daughter also fell seriously ill on hearing the shocking incident. She was also undergoing treatment at GBP hospital.
Meanwhile, the situation in Kanchanpur also remained tense with thousands of people gathered in the funeral procession of Srikanta Das, the protesting civilian shot dead by the police in self-defense. Srikanta’s dead body was released from the Dharmanagar hospital after autopsy and thousands of JMC activists and general people joined the long funeral procession that started from Dharmanagar.
“We shall not forget you sacrifice. You shall remain in our hearts”, the crowd cried while the procession finally reached Kanchanpur. JMC Convener, Sushanta Bikash Barua said, “thousands of people from Panisagar, Kanchanpur and other parts of the region partook in the rally to pay tribute to Srikanta”.
