Narcotics haul: Two women held in Tripura
Agartala, Dec 5: In a coordinated anti-narcotics drive spanning early morning surveillance and railway-based checking, Tripura Police and the BSF arrested two women and seized Yaba tablets, brown sugar and heroin during two separate operations in Dhanirampur and Mungiakami on Wednesday (December 4).
The first raid was carried out at around 5:30 am in Dhanirampur under the Sepahijala District of Tripura after the Special Branch received specific intelligence regarding drug circulation in the locality.
Acting on the information, a team of Sonamura Police Station personnel along with 81 Battalion BSF troopers raided the residence of Rina Rani Debbarma, aged 47, located in Ward No. 03 of Dhanirampur.
During the search, officers recovered 185 grams of suspected Yaba tablets, amounting to nearly 1,800 pieces, along with 3 grams of suspected brown sugar. She was detained on the spot and police confirmed that an NDPS case is being registered.
Earlier in the same district an operation was carried out from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm in Bijoy Nagar ADC area by a joint team of Sonamura Police Station, Special Task Force and 81 Battalion BSF personnel. The raid unearthed 24 plastic barrels packed with dry ganja, collectively weighing close to 860 kg. Officials confirmed that necessary legal action under the NDPS Act has begun.
Later in the day, another operation linked to Special Branch led to the second major breakthrough.
Security personnel posted at Mungiakami, acting on Special Branch information, intercepted narcotics during a routine check as the Silchar–Agartala Express was approaching Teliamura Railway Station.
During inspection, four soap cases containing about 44 grams of heroin were found inside the train. A woman passenger, identified as Sumita Das, was detained in connection with the recovery for questioning.
Both arrests are being seen as significant developments in Tripura’s intensified efforts to curb narcotics movement, particularly through residential routes and railway transit links.
Investigations are underway to trace the sources of the seized substances and identify potential members of the supply chain.
Officials have indicated that similar operations will be intensified in coming days, especially in areas vulnerable to drug trafficking and illegal transportation.
