The Tripura Transgender Welfare Board demands legal action following the alleged harassment and physical abuse of trans woman Ishani Das by her in-laws in Agartala.
While the earlier reports blamed her based on her statement. This report covers intervention of the Board and call for a fair investigation into the incident involving her husband, Akash Das.
Agartala Mar 2: The Tripura Transgender Welfare Board has demanded strict legal action against the in-laws of trans woman Ishani Das. The board alleged harassment and abuse.
Members said Ishani faced physical and mental torture after her in-laws learned about her biological identity.
They claimed the family accused her of deception. According to them, the in-laws alleged that she presented herself as a woman without revealing her past.

Ishani Das Shares Her Story
Narrating her ordeal, Ishani Das said she met her husband, Akash Das, on social media. Soon after, they began a relationship. It lasted nearly six years. Later, they got married.
However, Ishani maintained that she had informed Akash about her biological identity from the beginning. She insisted that she never hid her past.
She said she was born male and was earlier known as Nayan Das.
After her family in Agartala learned about her sexual orientation, she left home. Subsequently, she moved to Mumbai.
There, she worked at a beauty parlour. After completing her gender transition, she adopted the name Ishani Das.
Her parents still live at their ancestral house in Camperbazar, Agartala. Meanwhile, her husband belongs to Mohanpur in West Tripura district.
Allegations of Pressure and Threats
Ishani revealed that she initially refused marriage. She feared backlash from relatives and society.
However, she alleged that Akash repeatedly pressured her. She also claimed he threatened drastic steps if she declined.
As a result, she resigned from her job in Mumbai and returned to Agartala. Soon after her return, they conducted the marriage.
Abuse Allegations Surface
According to Ishani, the marriage remained peaceful for a few days.
However, problems started when her in-laws discovered her gender identity.
Soon after, videos and photos surfaced on social media. The clips showed her confined in a room in the presence of in-laws, relatives, and locals.
She alleged that her in-laws called her a fraud. They verbally abused her.
Moreover, she claimed they physically assaulted her. She further alleged that they forcibly shaved her head and then took her to a police station.
Welfare Board Intervenes, Demands Fair Probe
After receiving information, members of the Tripura Transgender Welfare Board rushed to the West Agartala Women Police Station. They brought Ishani under their protection.

Payel Das, a board member, said Ishani’s husband knew about her identity before marriage. Yet, she alleged, he failed to support her during the crisis.
The board has urged the police to conduct a fair investigation. It also demanded strict action against those responsible.
“Her husband did not defend her when she needed him the most. Therefore, we demand stringent action against everyone involved in this inhuman act,” Payel Das said.
