Tripura Business Conclave tea investment
As the State prepares to host the landmark Destination Tripura Business Conclave-2026 this week, Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC), confirmed the tea sector is set to secure a record-breaking Rs 726 crore in private investment.

The century-old tea sector of Tripura is on the brink of a massive economic revitalization as state officials announce a record-breaking Rs 726 crore private investment package. To be formalized at the upcoming Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026, the capital infusion aims to modernize production, scale exports, and transition the industry toward high-value organic cultivation and eco-tourism.

A New Era of Private Participation

Agartala: The two-day conclave, commencing July 9 at the Hapania International Fair premises, is expected to serve as a pivotal platform for Tripuraโ€™s industrial ambitions. Speaking at a press conference in Agartala, Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC), confirmed that the corporation would sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with four major private investors.

The investment commitments are headlined by NDR Infrastructure Private Limited, which has pledged Rs 500 crore. Joining them are Monoworld Recycling Private Limited and Itibachak Barta Foundation, each committing Rs 100 crore, alongside Infidirect Tech Solutions Private Limited with a Rs 26 crore investment.

“This is not merely an infusion of capital; it is a fundamental shift in how we approach our tea economy,” Ghosh noted. “By integrating private expertise with our TTDC-managed estates through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models, we are building a foundation for long-term, sustainable growth that will benefit the entire state.”

Strategic Modernization and Diversification

While Tripura has been a significant tea producer since 1916, its current outputโ€”predominantly CTC teaโ€”has largely remained focused on traditional domestic markets. The new investment roadmap aims to evolve the sector through several key initiatives:

  • Value-Added Production: Moving from bulk manufacturing to high-margin blending and premium packaging facilities.

  • Eco-Tourism and Branding: Developing tea-based tourism circuits and a dedicated tea museum to elevate the profile of local estates as travel destinations.

  • Organic Cultivation: Leveraging the stateโ€™s fertile soil to expand organic tea farming, targeting the growing global health-conscious consumer base.

  • Small Tea Grower Integration: Strengthening the supply chain by incorporating thousands of small producers into organized marketing channels, ensuring higher price realization and livelihood stability.

Unlocking Untapped Potential

Despite having approximately 12,832 hectares of land available for cultivation, the state currently utilizes less than half of that area for active plantation. With the absence of rigid land-ceiling restrictions, the government sees this expansion as the primary vehicle to move Tripura from a regional contributor to a national powerhouse.

“Our objective is to move beyond the traditional model,” said a senior official from the Department of Industries and Commerce. “By combining infrastructural upgradesโ€”such as better logistics and state-of-the-art processing unitsโ€”with an aggressive export-oriented strategy, we intend to make the ‘Tripureshwari Tea’ brand synonymous with premium quality.”

Strengthening the Grassroots

The economic windfall arrives amidst ongoing state efforts to improve the quality of life for the tea workforce. Recent government initiatives, such as the Mukhyamantri Cha Sramik Kalyan Prakalp, have already begun granting formal land titles to thousands of worker families. Officials emphasize that the expected industrial growth will be tied to these social welfare efforts, ensuring that as the industry modernizes, the workforce benefits from increased employment and enhanced income security.
