Agartala, December 09, 2019: Amid tight security arrangements, IPFT’s dawn-to-dusk bandh in Tripura that coincided with indefinite strike call by several other Regional Parties of the State started from 6am today morning. Police sources said, Bandh supporters have put up blockades at many places along the National Highway as well as other connecting roads. Sources also said, there is no report of any untoward incidences so far.
The State Government made elaborate security arrangements to maintain peace. IPFT – an ally of ruling BJP in Tripura – called 12-hour strike opposing Citizenship Amendment Bill, demanding separate Tipraland and implementation of NRC across the country. Both the Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varman and Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath strongly opposed the IPFT sponsored Bandh.
Meanwhile, all the examinations of Tripura Central University and MMB University had been cancelled. Railways cancelled today’s all scheduled train services except Agartala-Anandabihar bound Rajdhani Express.
In Dhalai district, picketers blocked road at five points in National Highway. Moreover, IPFT activists blocked roads connecting several areas with sub-divisional and district towns. Vehicular movement remained stalled as well as markets, educational institutions etc remained shut. Roads and markets wore a deserted look as people preferred to stay back at home. Weekly markets – Haat Baar – held every Monday in several areas across the State, remained suspended affecting rural economy and lives, sources said.
