Agartala, April 05, 2019: Tension gripped Mandwai Bazar area under West Tripura district after activists of IPFT went on rampage and created mayhem by indulging into vandalism. Two persons were arrested and administration clamped Section 144 to diffuse tension. It may be noted here, IPFT is a coalition partner in BJP-led Tripura Government, but contesting in Lok Sabha Polls after BJP refused to share seats with IPFT.
Sources said, INPT – a regional party of indigenous people – along with its ally Congress was scheduled to hold a poll rally at Mandwai today evening. Trouble started after a group of IPFT supporters who were travelling in vehicles to attend a poll meeting at Khumulwng under the same district, got tangled in verbal duel with INPT activists at Mandwai. The altercation soon turned violent and IPFT supporters allegedly vandalized the Stage erected for today’s Congress-INPT rally. Soon, IPFT went on rampage and first attacked CPIM Party office and ransacked the Office. After that, IPFT supporters stormed into nearby BJP party office and vandalized the Office, broke furniture and campaign materials were set on fire.
Although Congress, INPT and CPIM supporters fled from the spot, supporters of BJP started gathering at the site and a bloody confrontation between BJP and IPFT was ensuing. However, prompt action by security personnel prevented untoward incidences. Local administration imposed Section 144 in Mandwai area. Additional security personnel were deployed in the area. Situation was stated to be under control.
