Agartala, February 03, 2020 : In an almost two-decade old duping case, one Nigerian youth – Andro Smith – was brought to Tripura from Tihar Jail and produced before Dhalai District Court in Tripura. The Court sent to Police remand for 5-day today.
Based on a complaint by one Narendra Reang of Ambassa in Dhalai District, Police lodged a case against Andro Smith in 2000. After being arrested in Delhi and languishing in Tihar Jail, he was brought to Tripura and produced before the Court today.
Nigerian youth lays trap

Narendra Reang got a Phone call from a unknown number sometime in 2000. The caller identified himself Andro Smith and said that he was a member of a Christian Missionary. He told Narendra that the Missionary had prepared a developmental project of huge fund. Smith also proposed to give Narendra a share of 25 per cent of the fund which would run to several lakhs. Narendra Reang gradually fell into trap and unbridled greed overwhelmed him.
As per the instruction of Smith, Narendra Reang sent him total Rs 2 lakh 67 thousand at a Delhi address in two installments. After that Smith stopped receiving calls from Narendra. Being suspicious, he went to Ambassa Police and lodged a complaint.
“Initially I blindly believed in Smith’s words. He told me about a noble project to be implemented all over the country. He also told me that his Missionary is in the process of creating huge corpus of funds and promised to give me 25 per cent of the total fund. Smith told me that the amount that I would received would be several lakhs”, Narendra narrated his sordid saga.
Notably, during 2000 and even later on, duping through phone calling was rampant. Many people received such dubious calls – even though larger section avoided the trap, few fell victim to fraudsters ploy and Narendra Reang was one such person.
Police nabs conman
After receiving complaint, Ambassa Police referred the case to cyber crime department. Later, Smith along with two Delhi youth were arrested in Delhi and sent to Tihar Jail. Subsequently, two Delhi youth obtained bails – but Smith was in Tihar Jail for long periods. Today, he was brought and Ambassa Police started interrogating him. Narendra – visibly a happy person – is hopeful that he will get justice. “Even if almost 20 years elapsed, bringing the prime culprit in Ambassa brightens up possibility of getting justice”, Narendra commented.
