Agartala, April 15, 2020: People living at Srinagar village near India Bangladesh Border in South Tripura spent Bengali New Year’s Day on April 14 amid tension and search operations by BSF for garments meant for smuggling. In fact problem started from April 13 night.
Tension and panic ran high at bordering Srinagar under Sabroom in South Tripura on April 13 and April 14 as villagers and BSF jawans got involved in serious brawl in which one Sub-inspector of BSF was injured. Based on complaint lodged by BSF, Police arrested eight persons including several women, so far.
DIG of BSF Jamil Ahmed and SP of South District Jel Singh Meena visited the area in April 14.
The incident started at around 9pm on April 13 when BSF jawans challenged a group of garment-smugglers. Smugglers fled away leaving behind garments. After seizing the garments, BSF jawans of 31 bn raided house of one Ashoke Bhowmik and trouble started immediately as hundreds of villagers rushed to the spot after members of Bhowmik’s family raised alarm.
Soon, three BSF jawans including Sub-inspector Akshay Kumar Sharma was outnumbered and found themselves gheraoed by villagers. Out of the three, two jawans managed to flee but locals got hold of Sharma and started assaulting him – even threatened to kill him, sources alleged. Later, additional BSF force from Srinagar camp reached the spot and rescued the Sub-inspector from the clutches of ‘aggressive’ crowd, sources said.
Another BSF jawan also sustained injuries and referred to Udaipur District Hospital. Meanwhile, BSF seized garments of worth Rs 3 lakh 89 thousand 100 and arrested one person.
On the day of Poila Baisha, more than 200 BSF jawans cordoned off the area in Srinagar. Even as tension was palpable in the area, BSF conducted house-to house search operation in presence of in-charge of local Police Outpost Gopal Shukla Das and Pradhan of Krishnanagar Ujjala Mahajan Majumder.
One complaint against the BSF was lodged at Manubazar PS on behalf of family of Bhowmik. “BSF entered the house of Ashok Bhowmik and started assaulting members of the family. One pregnant woman was also injured in the assault – she had been referred to Udaipur District Hospital”, mentioned in the complaint.
