ProMASS: Jan 16, 2017: A major setback for Mulayam Singh Yadav as Election Commission today recognised Akhilesh Yadav faction as the Samajwadi Party. The EC permitted Akhilesh-led faction to use the name of the party and its symbol Bicycle. In the process, the Commission also rejected party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav”s claim to the party and the symbol. The verdict of three member EC headed by Nasim Zaidi is considered to be a major blow for Mulayam Singh by many political analysts.
The Commission observed the Akhilesh group enjoys overwhelming majority support both among the legislative and organizational wing of the party while Mulayam Singh Yadav did not file any affidavit of MPs, MLAs or any delegates except his own. The EC applied the test of majority supported as approved by the Supreme Court while deciding the case in favour of Akhilesh Yadav.
