Biswa Bandhu Sen Passes Away

Agartala Dec 26: Biswa Bandhu Sen, the Speaker of of Tripura Legislative Assembly passed away today.

Sen was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Bengaluru for over four months.

He was 72 and is survived by his wife, one son and a daughter. The Assembly Speaker suffered a brain haemorrhage at Agartala railway station on August 8 when he just boarded a train to go to his hometown, Dharmanagar in North Tripura district.

Sen was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly four times — twice from the Dharmanagar constituency on a Congress ticket in 2008 and 2013, and later twice in 2018 and 2023 as a nominee of the ruling BJP from the same seat.

After he suffered a brain haemorrhage on August 8, two doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, came here and they examined Sen’s health condition and treatment protocols first conducted at the Tripura Medical College and then at a private hospital in Agartala on the initiative of Tripura Chief Minister, IANS reported.

On August 11, Sen was flown to a Bengaluru-based hospital for further medical treatment where he breathed his last today.

Sen was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly four times — twice from the Dharmanagar constituency on a Congress ticket in 2008 and 2013, and later twice in 2018 and 2023 as a nominee of the ruling BJP from the same seat.

Three-Day State Mourning

The State government has declared a three-day period of state mourning beginning Friday to pay tribute to the late leader.

The government has further announced that Biswa Bandhu Sen will be accorded a state funeral on Saturday, December 27, as a mark of honour.

As part of the mourning observance from December 26 to December 28, the National Flag will be lowered to half-mast throughout the state, and all official entertainment programmes have been cancelled during this time.

In addition, the state administration has ordered the closure of all government offices on Friday, including those functioning outside Tripura, along with Public Sector Undertakings and educational institutions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the demise of Biswabandhu Sen and extended condolences to bereaved family.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has expressed profound grief over the demise of Bishwa Bandhu Sen.

Dr Saha termed his untimely death an irreparable loss to the state.

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said he was deeply saddened by the passing away of the Speaker and described the loss as one that would be felt across the state.

He extended his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family members and followers of the late leader.

Dr Saha also prayed to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and sought divine strength for the family to cope with the immense grief during this difficult period.

The Chief Minister said Bishwa Bandhu Sen’s contribution to public life and the legislature would always be remembered, and his demise has left a void that will be hard to fill.

Opposition leader and CPIM Politburo leader Jitendra Choudhary also expressed his grief and extended condolences to family members of the Speaker.
