Narkel Kunj Racial Slur Controversy: TMP Chief Calls for Unity.
TMP Takarjala Block president suspends accused Sukumar Debbarma.
Agartala, Dec 31: Tripura witnessed a tense and eventful final day of 2025 after a video allegedly showing a Village Council Chairman associated with the TIPRA Motha Party (TMP) verbally abusing Chakma traders at Narkel Kunj went viral, triggering widespread outrage across the state.
The clip, which surfaced on social media on Tuesday, drew sharp condemnation from political leaders, student bodies, and citizens, who termed the remarks racially offensive.
The controversy unfolded against the backdrop of heightened sensitivity following the recent killing of Angel Chakma, an incident that has already sparked public anger and demands for justice.
BJP MLA Shambhu Lal Chakma strongly denounced the alleged conduct of the TMP-affiliated Village Council Chairman, Sukumar Debbarma, echoing public sentiment and expressing serious concern over rising intolerance.
Several voices across platforms criticised the incident, pointing to growing resentment, particularly after Anjel Chakma’s death, in which at least six accused, mostly Nepali nationals, have been named.
Earlier in the day, Chakma students intensified their demand for strict action against those responsible by addressing a press conference in Agartala, calling the incident an affront to dignity and communal harmony.

By Wednesday evening, a suspension letter issued to Sukumar Debbarma began circulating, bearing the signature of the TMP Block president of 12 Takarjala.

The letter stated that the accused had been relieved of party responsibilities, although no announcement or confirmation from the TMP president or Chief was made available till the report was filed.
As public anguish mounted, TIPRA Motha Party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma issued an appeal for unity among the people of the Northeast.
In a series of social media posts on the last day of the year, he urged national media outlets to give greater visibility to the region and acknowledge the deep-rooted patriotism of its people.
Debbarma highlighted that despite the Northeast playing a crucial role in protecting national borders and preventing external aggression, its people continue to face racial stereotyping and derogatory labelling.
The national media should also highlight about us and how patriotic we have been as Northeastern people . We have not allowed Chinese to enter our territory and yet we are called Chinese , chinky or momo by some fools ! Is this not alienation of us from our beloved country pic.twitter.com/arfunN27sc

Such treatment, he said, fosters alienation and distances Northeastern communities from the nation they loyally serve.
Referring to the killing of Angel Chakma, the TMP chief observed that the attackers neither considered the victim’s tribal identity nor his religious background.
Those who targeted Anjel chakma did it know which ethnic tribe he belonged to or which religion he followed . Yet we are divided along different language or tribes and religion – end this divide my young people let us rise as one pic.twitter.com/t7Mksy6qzj

He expressed concern that, despite this reality, society remains divided along ethnic, linguistic, and religious lines.
According to him, the present moment demands togetherness to safeguard the interests of the next generation.
The TMP Chief also responded to remarks made by BJP MLA Shambhu Lal Chakma.
Pradyot Kishore Debbarma informed the MLA that he had instructed party leaders to suspend Sukumar Debbarma.
The TMP chief also urged the MLA to seek the resignation of a police officer accused of attempting to portray Angel Chakma’s killing as a misunderstanding and delaying the registration of an FIR for three days.

He maintained that while political differences are inevitable, communities within the Northeast must not see each other as enemies but instead recognise the real threats undermining justice and social harmony.
