Agartala, Mar 31: The political landscape of Tripura’s hills is witnessing a high-octane showdown as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sharpens its offensive against the Tipra Motha Party (TMP).

With the April 12 TTAADC elections looming, the saffron party has deployed its top tribal leadership to dismantle the regionalist “Thansa” (unity) narrative, characterizing the contest as a choice between “high-speed development” and “stagnant regionalism.”

‘Train vs Tom-Tom’: Minister Bikash Debbarma Leads the Charge

At a massive show of strength at the Kunjamura School ground in Teliamura, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma used a vivid transport analogy to describe the electoral race.

Campaigning for BJP candidate Billu Jamatia in the 11 Maharani–Teliamura constituency, Debbarma likened the BJP to a powerful “train” and dismissed Tipra Motha as a “tom-tom” (e-rickshaw), predicting the latter would run out of steam well before reaching the finish line.

The Minister did not mince words regarding the current ADC administration’s financial track record.

He alleged a complete breakdown of governance, claiming that despite significant funds being funneled for tribal welfare, the ground reality in the hills remains marred by poor infrastructure and a lack of essential services.

“The BJP is set to sweep all 28 seats. After the results on April 17, you will see a queue of TMP leaders waiting to join our ranks,” Debbarma asserted, signaling a confident outlook for the party.

News Analysis: The Shifting Sands of Tribal Politics

This election marks a critical juncture in Tripura’s tribal politics. Historically, the TTAADC has been a seesaw between the Left Front and regional forces. In 2021, Tipra Motha’s “Greater Tipraland” demand swept the council, ending decades of Left dominance.

But TMP is no longer talking about Greater Tipraland demand.

Moreover, the 2026 battle is different; the BJP, which previously played second fiddle in the hills, is now positioning itself as the sole provider of “Direct Benefit” and “Modi’s Guarantee.”

By aggressively targeting the TMP’s alleged “misgovernance,” the BJP aims to flip the script from identity-based voting to performance-based accountability.

South Tripura & Khowai: A Wave of Defections

The BJP’s organizational machinery is successfully denting the TMP’s grassroots base through targeted “joining programmes”:

South Tripura: In the 27 East Muhuripur–Bhuratali seat, former TMP leader Mukta Mohan Tripura joined the BJP with 17 supporters, citing a total lack of engagement from the sitting MDC.

Khowai District: In the 16 Ramchandraghat constituency, MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury inducted 18 workers from six families who defected from Tipra Motha, reinforcing the narrative that the regional party’s influence is waning.

Gandachhara in Dhalai: The most significant hit occurred in the 8 Gangannagar–Gandachhara seat, where 108 voters from 39 families abandoned both TMP and CPIM to join the BJP under candidate Bhumikananda Reang.

Development Roadmap vs. Regional Rhetoric

As the April 12 polling date nears, the BJP’s campaign is pivoting toward a “Holistic Development” agenda.

Candidates like Sanjeeb Reang in the 26 Bir Chandra Kalsi seat are conducting door-to-door visits, focusing on the “last-mile delivery” of drinking water, electricity, and connectivity – issues that resonate deeply in the hilly terrains where institutional neglect has been a long-standing grievance.
