Sonamura/Agartala, April 5: As the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections draw closer, the political temperature in the 19 Amtali–Golaghati constituency has changed from active campaigning to volatile confrontation.
What began as a late-night attempt to torch political property escalated into daylight violence on Sunday, leaving multiple party workers injured and local administration on high alert. The incident highlights a worrying trend of pre-poll friction in Tripura’s hills, where the stakes for territorial control have never been higher.
Late-Night Arson Sparks Tension in Rampada Bari
The trouble started late Saturday night in Bhriguram Chowdhury Para, located within Booth No. 45 of Rampada Bari ADC Village. According to local sources, unidentified miscreants attempted to set fire to booth offices belonging to both the BJP and the Tipra Motha Party (TMP).
Fortunately, alert residents noticed the smoke and intervened before the flames could consume the structures. This grassroots vigilance prevented a major fire, but the psychological impact had already taken hold. By Sunday morning, the atmosphere in Golaghati was thick with resentment and mutual suspicion.
Minister Kishore Barman Levels Conspiracy Charges
Minister Kishore Barman arrived at the site early Sunday to inspect the damage and console local workers. During his visit, Barman did not mince words, labeling the arson attempt a “deliberate conspiracy” designed to destabilize law and order ahead of the crucial TTAADC polls.
In a pointed political accusation, Barman suggested a shift in tactical alliances. He claimed that individuals previously linked to the CPIM—who allegedly targeted BJP offices during the 2023 Assembly elections—have now integrated themselves into the TMP.
Barman asserted that these elements are attempting to “recreate an atmosphere of fear” because they cannot reconcile with the changing political preferences of the indigenous population. He further criticized the ADC’s performance over the last five years, characterizing the current administration as a “jungle raj” lacking in transparency and development.
Violence Escalates: Eight Injured in Clashes
Despite the ministerial presence, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Reports indicate that a group of youths disrupted the Minister’s visit, hurling verbal abuses and provocative slogans.
The vehicle of Swapan Das, Chairman of the Nalchar Block Panchayat Samiti, was reportedly targeted during the chaos. Even media personnel on the ground faced threats, hindering the flow of information.

The confrontation turned physical shortly after, resulting in injuries to at least eight BJP supporters. Emergency responders rushed five victims to the Taksapara Primary Health Centre, while three others required the facilities of the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Hospital in Melaghar.
The most serious casualty, Kishan Morcha leader Lal Bahadur Tripura, was subsequently referred to GB Hospital in Agartala for advanced medical care due to the severity of his injuries.
News Analysis: The High Stakes of the TTAADC Polls
Historically, elections in Tripura’s tribal belt have been a litmus test for ethnic identity politics versus national developmental narratives. Since the 2021 TTAADC elections, where the Tipra Motha Party emerged as a dominant force, the “Hill-Valley” political divide has seen frequent friction. This latest incident in Golaghati reflects a “zero-sum” approach to territorial influence.
For the BJP, securing the ADC is vital to consolidating its “Double Engine” governance. For TMP, maintaining its stronghold is a matter of political survival. The transition of cadres between parties, as alleged by Barman, often brings old rivalries into new party banners, making local-level violence a recurring challenge for the State Election Commission.
