In a major boost to skill development and global employability, the Tripura government signed an MoU with Ramakrishna Mission on June 2 in Agartala to establish the Northeast’s first dedicated Foreign Language School and a Centre for Human Excellence.

The initiative aims to equip youth with language skills, professional training and global career opportunities.

Agartala: The State government on Tuesday formalized a landmark partnership with Ramakrishna Mission, Viveknagar, to establish a School of Languages and a Centre for Human Excellence in the state.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Directorate of Skill Development and Ramakrishna Mission at the State Secretariat in Agartala. Chief Minister Manik Saha attended the signing ceremony and described the initiative as a transformative step for the state’s education and employment ecosystem.

According to the Chief Minister, the project will strengthen skill development and create new opportunities for Tripura’s youth in both domestic and international job markets.

“India and society need educated, ethical and value-based youth. Discipline, character building and dedication to service are essential for building a healthy society,” he said.

Northeast’s First Dedicated Foreign Language Institution

One of the most significant features of the project is the establishment of what is expected to be the Northeast region’s first dedicated foreign language school.

The institution will offer training in several globally relevant languages, including German, French and Spanish. It will also provide courses in Hindi, Sanskrit and Bengali.

Government officials believe language proficiency is becoming increasingly important in a globalized economy. Skilled professionals with foreign language capabilities enjoy greater mobility and access to international employment opportunities.

The School of Languages is expected to bridge this gap and prepare students for careers in sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, caregiving, information technology and international services.

Centre for Human Excellence to Focus on Holistic Development

Alongside language education, the project will establish a Centre for Human Excellence.

The centre will feature:

  • Computer training facilities
  • Advanced language laboratories
  • Smart classrooms
  • Meditation and personality development spaces

Officials said the objective is not only to improve employability but also to nurture leadership, discipline and ethical values among young people.

The initiative reflects a broader approach that combines professional skills with character development.

TIFT Played Key Role in Conceptualizing the Project

The project traces its origins to the efforts of the Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIFT).

TIFT conducted skill-gap assessments and studied future employment trends affecting the state’s youth. During these assessments, the organization identified foreign language training as a critical requirement for improving global workforce participation.

Recognizing growing international demand for multilingual professionals, TIFT proposed a dedicated foreign language institution for Tripura.

In early 2025, TIFT initiated discussions with Ramakrishna Mission authorities. The organization highlighted the Mission’s proven track record in value-based education, vocational training and youth development.

Officials said TIFT’s intervention helped transform the idea into a strategic partnership model. After developing the concept, TIFT handed over the proposal to the Directorate of Skill Development for further processing and government approval.

Inspired by Successful Models in Hyderabad and Kolkata

Speaking at the event, Ramakrishna Mission president Maharaj Shubhkarananda said similar institutions run by the Mission in Hyderabad and Kolkata have achieved remarkable success.

According to him, those centres train nearly 18,000 students annually across 18 disciplines while offering instruction in both Indian and foreign languages.

Their success has provided a strong foundation for launching a similar initiative in Tripura.

Vision Aligned with National Skill Development Goals

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha emphasized that India possesses one of the world’s largest youth populations. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently prioritized skill development as a key pillar of national growth.

The Chief Minister said the new institution would equip students with globally relevant competencies and improve access to employment opportunities within India and overseas.

Experts believe the project could strengthen Tripura’s position as an emerging educational and skill-development destination in Northeast India.

The event was attended by Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, Industries and Commerce Secretary Kiran Gitte, Chief Minister’s OSD Parmananda Sarkar Banerjee, Director of Skill Development Pradeep K., monks of Ramakrishna Mission and senior government officials.

A short documentary on the proposed institution was also screened during the programme.
