The state Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and following Prime Minister Narendra Modi mantra of โ€œSabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,โ€ decided on August 20, 2026 to provide a 100% subsidy – worth Rs 194.70 crore this year – against the additional increased tariff.

He said the government had already allocated Rs 77 crore and Rs 57 lakh as subsidy.

An additional Rs 117 crore and Rs 13 lakh will now be spent to cover the increased tariff burden.

Thousands of electricity consumers in Tripura will get relief from the higher tariff announced for 2026โ€“27. The state government has decided to absorb the entire additional burden for most consumer categories. The benefit will apply retrospectively from May 2026. Consumers who already paid higher bills will receive adjustments in their next three monthly bills.

Key Takeaways

  • Tripura government will bear 100% of the additional electricity tariff burden under the 2026โ€“27 tariff order.
  • The subsidy will cover domestic consumers, businesses and industries, while specified categories will receive a 15% subsidy.
  • Consumers who already paid higher bills will receive adjustments over their September, October and November bills.

Tripura Government Announces Full Tariff Relief

The Tripura government has decided to bear 100 pc of the additional electricity tariff burden arising from the new 2026โ€“27 tariff order.

The decision follows growing concern among households, farmers, small traders and businesses over the revised electricity charges.

A senior government representative announced the decision while explaining the government response to the public concern.

The government said it understood the financial pressure created by the increase, particularly the higher fixed charges applicable to permanent electricity consumers.

โ€œWe decided that this additional burden should not remain on the shoulders of the people,โ€ the representative said.

The government will therefore absorb the additional amount through a subsidy.

Relief for Households, Businesses and Industries

The subsidy will cover a wide range of electricity consumers.

Domestic consumers will receive the benefit. Small, medium and large businesses will also qualify. Industrial consumers will receive the benefit as well.

The government said the key point is that consumers will not have to pay the additional amount created by the revised tariff.

In simple terms, if the revised tariff has increased a consumer bill, the state government will cover the additional portion.

The representative stressed the importance of the 100% subsidy.

He described the decision as unprecedented in the history of Tripura.

Some Categories to Get 15% Subsidy

The government has also specified exceptions to the full subsidy.

Railway traction and certain defence installations will not receive the 100 pc benefit. Establishments such as All India Radio and Doordarshan will also fall under the separate category.

These consumers will receive a 15% subsidy on the additional tariff burden.

For the remaining eligible categories, the government will cover the full additional amount.

Subsidy to Apply from May 2026

The decision will have retrospective effect.

State Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced in Agartala on August 21 that the State Government will shoulder the Additional Electricity Tariff Burden through 100 pc subsidy

The government will implement the subsidy from May 2026, when the additional tariff became applicable.

This provision will also protect consumers who have already paid their electricity bills at the revised rates.

They will not have to seek a separate refund.

Instead, the excess amount they already paid will be adjusted against future bills.

Three-Month Adjustment for Consumers

The adjustment will take place over three months.

Consumers who already paid bills at the higher rate will see the adjustment reflected in their electricity bills for September, October and November.

The government said this mechanism would ensure that consumers receive the benefit even if they have already cleared bills based on the revised tariff.

The move is expected to ease concerns among consumers who feared that payments made under the higher tariff would not be recovered.

CM Manik Saha Took Personal Interest

The government also highlighted the role of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha in the decision.

According to the representative, the Chief Minister had been personally concerned about the impact of the revised electricity tariff.

He called an urgent meeting and held detailed discussions with senior officials.

The Chief Minister also returned to Tripura from Delhi at one stage to chair a meeting on the electricity tariff issue. He later returned to Delhi after completing the meeting.

The representative described this as an example of political responsibility.

He said major financial decisions require detailed calculations, documentation and legal procedures. The government therefore needed time before announcing the subsidy.

Government Says Decision Balances Public Interest and Financial Process

The representative said the government had recognised the problem before the final decision.

He pointed to earlier public statements and discussions where the government had indicated that it was considering measures to reduce the impact of the tariff increase.

However, he said the government could not make such a major financial decision without completing the required administrative and legal processes.

The final decision now places the additional tariff burden on the state government rather than consumers.

For most electricity users in Tripura, the immediate message is clear: the additional amount resulting from the 2026โ€“27 tariff increase will be covered by the government through a 100% subsidy.
