He highlighted the institute’s placement record and called for stronger industry collaboration, research opportunities and innovation as the institution prepares to expand its academic infrastructure across 50 acres.
The proposed permanent campus of IIIT Agartala marks an important step towards strengthening technical education and research infrastructure in Tripura. Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony at Mohanpur, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the institute’s progress and its potential to prepare students for national and international opportunities.
Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu attended the programme. Nath congratulated everyone associated with the project and described the occasion as a significant milestone for technical education, research and innovation in the state.
The minister said IIIT Agartala had demonstrated how students from Tripura could compete and succeed beyond the state. He noted that the institute had made considerable progress within a few years of its establishment.
Institute Records Strong Placement Performance
IIIT Agartala began its academic journey on June 25, 2018. Since then, the institute has worked to establish a foundation of academic excellence, technical competence and industry exposure.
According to Nath, five batches have completed their academic programmes, with a combined total of 110 students. The institute has maintained an average placement rate of more than 80% across these batches.
The first batch achieved a 100% placement rate, highlighting the employment opportunities available to graduates. Nath also cited the highest annual salary package of Rs 21.99 lakh as an indication of the professional prospects open to students.
He said organisations such as Amazon, Red Hat and Media.net had also been associated with employment opportunities for students.
The placement figures, according to the minister, demonstrate the potential of students from Tripura to secure opportunities in the technology sector. The institute’s academic and industry exposure can help students develop the skills needed to compete in a demanding professional environment.
Proposed 50-Acre Campus to Support Growth
The proposed permanent campus will cover 50 acres of land at Mohanpur. Nath said the new campus would create opportunities to expand academic activities and develop modern facilities for learning and research.
The project is expected to provide a foundation for the institute’s future growth. With additional space for academic activities and research, the campus will offer scope to strengthen its role in technical education.
Nath stressed that the development of infrastructure should go hand in hand with academic ambition. He called for an environment that encourages students to explore new ideas, ask questions and challenge conventional thinking.
He also emphasised the need to nurture innovation and develop practical solutions to real-world problems. According to the minister, the campus should encourage students to move beyond classroom learning and pursue new technological ideas.
Minister Calls for Global Technology Ambitions
Nath said Tripura could produce talented professionals capable of making an impact across the world. He urged students to look beyond conventional career paths and aim to develop technological products and solutions with global applications.
He cited Bengaluru, Singapore, London and Silicon Valley as examples of places where technology-driven ideas and products could find applications.

The minister stressed that students from Agartala should aspire to compete in international markets and contribute to technological progress. He encouraged an outlook that connects local talent with global opportunities.
At the same time, Nath said students must remain connected to Tripura’s development needs. He called on them to use their technical knowledge and professional experience to address challenges in the state.
Industry Partnerships and Innovation in Focus
Ratan Lal Nath called for stronger partnerships between IIIT Agartala and technology companies, data and research institutions, and international organisations.
He also stressed the importance of expanding internships, live projects, mentorship programmes, innovation challenges and entrepreneurship opportunities. These initiatives, he said, could help bridge the gap between academic learning and the demands of the real-world economy.
Closer industry engagement would give students more opportunities to understand practical challenges and apply their technical knowledge. It could also encourage them to develop solutions with wider applications.
Nath said the permanent campus should foster an academic culture that supports curiosity, critical thinking and creativity. He emphasised that students must have the freedom to question established ideas and explore innovative approaches.
The broader objective, he indicated, should be to combine quality education with practical experience, research and entrepreneurship.
