Modernization of agriculture along with augmented productivity is the new mantra of the Tripura government to bring about a revolution in the agriculture sector and eradicate hunger. The new set of mantra are aimed at achieving cent percent food security for all through effective PDS and tech-driven agriculture, said a highly placed source of the state government.
The source maintaining anonymity said, “The prime focus of the government is to eradicate hunger and devise more and more technology driven agriculture in less productive areas –Tilla and high lands for augmenting productivity”.
For Tripura, the source said, there is a target of 10 years to complete the goals but to begin with there are some small targets set for steady fulfillment.
In the first stage, more stress is being given on the primary level. “By 2020 the goal is set to maintain the genetic diversity of the seeds, cultivated plants, and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species, including through soundly managed and diversified seen and plant banks at regional levels, and promote access to and fair and equitable sharing benefits arising from utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional technologies”, an official document prepared on the goals reads.
“We have also planned to increase irrigable land from 30.75 percent to 45.50 percent by 2030 to aid farmers with better infrastructure for production. More the area we can cover with irrigation, the more agriculture and economic activities allied to it will flourish. There are also initiatives to woo more farmers in agri-allied businesses too for providing them with a better platform”, the source said. Moreover, he said, “There are also plans to fulfill the internationally-agreed targets on stunted and wasted children under five years of age, malnutrition in all forms in lactating mothers, pregnant women and adolescent girls by 2025. As far as state is concerned, we have taken initiatives to reduce stunted and wasted children below five years by 5 percent in the first stage and all the schemes that are providing nutritious food and edibles to pregnant and lactating mothers will continue in full swing”.
