CPIM-led Left parties organized protest rallies in different areas across Tripura opposing Agri Bills recently passed in Parliament. “As part of the national protest programme, Left Front wings have hold rallies in the State today condemning Farm Bills”, CPIM party sources in Agartala said.
Even as strict restrictions were put on place, especially in Agartala, limiting unnecessary political gathering, the administration seemed all the way ill equipped to manage the situation as protestors crowded city roads.
Several hundred CPM activists holding placards and chanting slogans started a huge rally from the CPIM West district committee office located at Melarmath in Agartala.
Deputy leader of the opposition Badal Chowdhury, CPIM West Tripura district secretary Pabitra Kar along with other leaders also took part in the rally. The police personnel including TSR Jawans laid a siege at paradise chowmuhani and prevented the CPIM activists. The police also put up barricades to push back the activists.
The CPIM activists flouting Covid norms got involved in a scuffle with the police personnel and dashed forward overcoming the barricades. The huge contingent of police deployed to manage the situation had apparently failed to thwart the CPIM leaders.
In another attempt, the police tried to prevent the CPIM activists in front of West Agartala police station but in vain.
Addressing the rally, CPM leader Badal Chowdhury said, “We demand immediate repeal of the farm Bills. The ruling government banking on its majority has passed the Bills in a completely illegal. The prime motive of the Modi government is to curtail the freedom of the farmers and also to offer a smooth passage to their corporate friends in holding control of the agriculture market”.
Veteran Chowdhury, braving all the complications that Covid 19 may pose for him due to his high risk age group, also stood along with CPIM activists and participated in the protests that showed his obvious refusal in terms of adhering to the Covid 19 related guidelines.
Chowdhury also accused the ruling Tripura government of trampling the democracy. “All the democratic rights of people stand oppressed here in the state. People have no rights to express. We condemn this attitude of the government”, he said.
Even as it was a rainy day in several parts of the State, Left Front activists held similar protest programmes across the state including sub-divisional areas.
