Even as the whole country is talking about skewed sex ratio in favour of men, number of females is slightly higher than that of males in Tripura – for every 1000 men, there are 1011 females in Tripura, State Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said this on Thursday.
Referring to a survey conducted by the Indian Institute of Health Management Research and published in National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), Nath said, the sex ratio in Tripura was 998 female in 1000 males in 2015-16. However, according to the survey, it has improved to 1011 females in every 1000 males during 2019-20.
Nath also mentioned about other facts that the NFHS-5 revealed and said that the information showed that socio-economic condition of people of Tripura had improved over the years between 2015-16 and 2019-20.
According to NFHS-5 data, number of females per 1000 males is higher in rural areas compared to urban areas of Tripura. It stands at 1033 females in rural areas compared to 956 in urban areas.
Some of the other key indicators suggest percentage of children under Age 5 years whose birth was registered with the civil authority also increased in 2019-20 to 93.8 from 91.6 in 2015-16.
Institutional delivery is considered to be one of the important indicators of socio-economic development of population. To this end, NFHS-5 data showed an encouraging result. In 2015-16, institutional delivery stood at 79.9 while it improved to 89.2 per cent in 2019-20.
Quoting the NFHS-5 data, Nath said, population living in households with electricity has improved to 98.2 in 2019-20 from 92.8 per cent.
Remarkable progress has been noticed in case of households with improved sanitation facility. “In 2015-16, improved sanitation facility was available to 63.7 per cent households which climbed up to 73.6 per cent in 2019-20”, Nath said and added, population living in households with improved drinking facility has also improved in 2019-20 compared to 2015-16.
