Family members of Sukumar Debnath who were trampled to death by wild elephants will get financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh, said local MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury on Thursday.
Sukumar Debnath, a vegetable seller of Baghber under Ghilatali in Kalyanpur was killed by a herd of wild elephants at Kalinjay Sepai Para while returning home from Uttar Maharani on his bicycle on January 4 last.
Today, the funeral ceremony of the deceased person was held. MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury visited the bereaved members of the deceased and condoled the death of Sukumar Debnath.
Chowdhury said that Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had inquired about the family members of the deceased Sukumar Debnath from him and assured of government assistance to the family members.
In the wake of relentless havoc created by the elephants, the state government is continuing its efforts to prevent elephant attacks in different villages of Kalyanpur, he said.
In Teliamura sub-division, two persons were killed in elephant attacks so far. Moreover, elephants have destroyed crops and properties as well. To end the jumbo-menace, a team of civil and Police administration of the Teliamura sub-division along with the Teliamura Forest department personnel jointly visited jumbo-hit villages under Krishnapur today.
Following the footsteps of the wild elephants, the team members started preparing a map to chalk out a roadmap to drive away from the wild elephants from human habitats to forest areas. The team inspected Krishnapur, Madhya Krishnapur, DM Colony, DM Para, Champlai and adjoining areas.
Later, Forest department personnel told the media that driving out elephants would begin after completion of the inspection.
