Maharshi Narad is considered to be the first journalist in the Universe. Known for his unbridled devotion, he perfectly synchronized his devotion and role of a commenter.
The Maharshi advised not to discriminate or differentiate while delivering information. Ideal journalism, according to Narad, rests on three 3S – Saman (equality), Sahaj (Easiness) and Sanchar (Communicate) the whole truth, Viswa Sambad Centre of Tripura Unit, a RSS affiliated media body asserted.
Viswa Sambad Centre of Tripura Unit observed Narad Jayanti in Agartala for the ‘first time’ in Tripura on Tuesday.
Narad is believed to be born on Krishna-Dwitiya of Jyestha month. To remind and recapitulate Narad Muni’s teachings on true journalism, Narad Jayanti is celebrated, members of the Viswa Sambad Centre asserted.
In the programme, Prafulla Pradip Ketkar, Chief Editor of the magazine – ‘Organizer’, Manas Pal, Executive Editor of Tripura Times and Sunil Mohanty were present.
Sunil Mohanty explained the relevance of the observance of Narad Jayanti. Mohanty said there are 84 Bhakti Sutras out of which 72 sutras described the principles of journalism with stressing equality while delivering information. The sutras contain various aspects of information dissemination which are still relevant for modern-day journalists.
Taking part in the discussion, Manas Pal detailed the evolution of media since the time of the East India Company. Pal described the role of the media during different phases. He said, the journey of institutional media started in 1780 with the publication of Hicky’s Bengal gazette – it was the first newspaper printed in Asia. Terming that period as phase one, Pal said the paper was a strong critic of Warren Hastings regime. He opined the focus was on corruption and lack of facilities like road connectivity and drinking water etc. The second phase in Indian journalism started with the beginning of rebellion against British raj and struggle for Independence. At that time, patriotism took the centre stage.
“We are witnessing the third phase in the media arena which is characterized by the advent of electronic media, internet and social media platforms”, he said and highlighted different aspects of present day media.
In his speech as the keynote speaker Ketkar said the prime purpose of celebration of Narad Jayanti is to ‘de-colonize’ the mind set up of people. According to him, owing to education and various social systems, people are habituated to look into a matter through the glasses of ‘colonial’ mentality. He highlighted rich Indian history and traditions and explained three basic principles of ideal journalism.
“It is important to deliver the whole truth. For gathering true information, the communicator needs to see, listen and interact with verified sources. Thirdly, the information should be delivered for ‘Sarva Hiteshu’ – the time and essence of the information to be shared needs to be analyzed”, Ketkar said.
