One BSF personnel was killed after extremists of Banned NLFT opened fire targeting the on duty BSF jawans. The incident occurred along the India – Bangladesh border in North Tripura on Thursday (Aug 19). 

 

The deceased jawan – Grijesh Kumar (53) – a Habildar sustained serious bullet injuries.

 

He was flown to Agartala for treatment and later, succumbed. He hailed from Madhya Pradesh, IANS reported.

 

The NLFT extremists fired from the Bangladesh territory and immediately after the ambush fled deep inside the mountainous forest of the neighbouring country after the BSF troopers retaliated the attack,” Police spokesman told IANS.

A huge contingent of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) led by Inspector General of police Arindam Nath and senior BSF officials have rushed to the mountainous areas for taking further course of action.

 

The jawan was posted in Simanapur 2 under 145 battalion of BSF under Anandabazar police station in North Tripura district. The injured jawan was brought to Agartala in a chopper. However, he succumbed to injuries.

 

According to available information, multiple bullets hit the jawan’s body. 

 

The BSF jawans were patrolling in the bordering areas this morning as per daily routine when the NLFT opened fire.  

 

Later, other BSF jawans also retaliated.  As a result, the group of extremists fled from the scene.

 

The slain havildar, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, belonged to 145 battalion of BSF.

Friday’s incident was the first militant violence this year.

Tripura shares an 856 km international border with Bangladesh.
