The two-day Science20 (S20) Summit under India’s G20 Presidency opened new avenues for the bamboo sector in Tripura. The S20 in Agartala commenced on April 3 at the Indoor Exhibition Hall of the Hapania International Fair Ground in which around 70 national and international delegates under G20 countries attended the Summit and deliberated on ‘Clean Energy for a Greener Future’.
At the S20 summit, scientists, policymakers including Niti Aayog officials and other stakeholders deliberated on the production of ‘green’ hydrogen as the clean energy from the ‘green gold’ – Bamboo.
Apart from Bamboo as a source of green hydrogen, bamboo products of the State displayed at the exhibition in also grabbed the attention of the visiting delegates from different countries, said Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha while interacting with the media on the sideline of the S20 Summit on April 3.
Dr Saha said, “We had a held a meeting on Bamboo and laying stress on the bamboo industry. Based of bamboo we can do so many things. The purpose of this conclave is to explore innovative solutions that can help in tackling climate change while providing access to clean energy sources. We are already working on renewable energy like solar, and biomass. We are also working on generating ‘Green Hydrogen’ for renewable energy from bamboo”.
He added, in this conclave, we are giving stress on producing ‘Green Hydrogen’ from Bamboo. Several scientists in our country and also by foreign delegates during the G-20 conclave have suggested that we should give more emphasis on green hydrogen”.
In this connection, Dr Saha also pointed out experts identified three-four Bamboo species out of over 20 species available in Tripura which satisfy the quality standards and are suitable for scientific uses. The experts also suggested the Government follow the ‘Vietnam Model’ for augmenting the quality and capacity of the State Bamboo sector.
He said that as generating wind energy is not feasible and the Tripura government is working on solar energy and already 107-megawatt solar energy the state government is generating.
“We have already set up 18 microgrid stations in rural hamlets. Total 274 microgrid stations are in the pipeline. Under biomass about 2, 500 families have been covered but now the main agenda is ‘Green Energy’. Whatever is being discussed here in the conclaves will be collectively placed and later area-specific suitable projects will be initiated”, the Chief Minister said.
Industry and Commerce Department Minister Santana Chakma, Janajati Welfare Minister Bikasha Debbarma and others were present in the press meeting.
