In yet another unfortunate incident of a wild elephant attack, a 53-year-old individual sustained injuries on Thursday night in Tripura on Thursday night. The incident took place in the Jumbari area of Madhya Krishnapur Panchayat, falling under the jurisdiction of the Teliamura Police Station.
The victim, identified as Niranjan Biswas and a resident of the Officetila area, was attacked by a wild elephant while he was returning home after tending to his own cropland in Jumbari. The encounter with the wild elephant occurred during his journey back. Although he managed to survive the encounter, the injuries he sustained left him unable to walk, forcing him to remain in the Jumbari area overnight.
Due to Biswas’s failure to return home, a sense of fear pervaded the community, deterring anyone from venturing into the Jumbari area, apprehensive of potential elephant attacks. It wasn’t until the following morning that local residents discovered Biswas on the Jumbari road. Promptly, local fire service personnel were alerted and they swiftly transported the injured individual to Teliamura Hospital for medical attention.
This incident underscores a recurring issue in the region. Just a few months ago, a person lost their life in a similar wild elephant attack in the Krishnapur area. Despite the well-known vulnerability of the region to such attacks, local farmers, driven by their agricultural pursuits, continue to enter the area, often falling victim to elephant encounters.
The local populace has repeatedly beseeched the authorities for intervention to mitigate the elephant menace. However, the villagers contend that their pleas have gone unanswered, leading to a lack of effective action from the administration.
